For many people the changes associated with dementia, such as memory loss or difficulty with communication, can lead to a gradual withdrawal or exclusion from participating in these day to day and leisure activities.

Common dementia related issues may include difficulties with remembering where things are, sitting down and standing up, calling for help, falls, burns, and using entertainment devices and stimulating the brain, relaxation, communication. Consider these features in a study or spare room which may support independence and safety:

  • remove mats and clutter
  • functional furniture – armchair heights, supportive seat and back, armrests and water proof
  • landmarks – feature walls and visual cues

Some of the ideas are simple and inexpensive, whilst others require professional installation and are more costly. For professional advise regarding your circumstances and needs, please contact the Independent Living Centre on 1300 885 886.
