Completing normal household activities is a matter of pride for some of our older residents; daily washing is a task that can be completed efficiently within the home.
Common dementia related issues in the laundry may include difficulties with using appliances and remembering to hang laundry, and with maintaining safety (chemical, electrical, flood, fire, slips and falls). This can lead to changes in appearance and grooming.
Stand alone devices to note include:
- combined washer / dryer
- iron with safety cut-off feature if left unattended or placed face down
- iron safe – may reduce the risk of burns
- lockable cupboard for secure storage of cleaning products, bleaches, poisons and detergents
- appliance locks
- flood prevention and detection devices – pressure sensitive sink plug (‘magi plug’) / water overflow prevention device for the sink, shut off valves, flood detectors
- dolly pegs
- door knob covers
- tap caps
- fire prevention/ lint filters - labels and signs or appliance locks
- taps clearly showing hot/cold
- regularly used items stored between shoulder and hip heights
Connected technology
- home automation – flood detection, lighting, water and exhaust functions. The light comes on automatically as you approach the laundry, and turns off automatically when you leave.
Some of the ideas are simple and inexpensive, whilst others require professional installation and are more costly. For professional advise regarding your circumstances and needs, please contact the Independent Living Centre on 1300 885 886.
