The environment, technology and you can help a person living with dementia to use mobility aids, improve orientation, secure the home, walk safely and provide suitable access for wanted visitors.

Rear Entrance during renovations

Remembering to lock doors and windows, being able to judge a dangerous situation and calling for help if needed are all important skills for maintaining both personal and home security. These skills can be compromised because of changes in memory associated with dementia. People living at home with dementia can be vulnerable to financial exploitation and risks to their well being.

Environmental features, similar to the front entrance, include:

  • handrails and ramp
  • removal of bushes
  • safe, clear pathways
  • no mats at entrance
  • garbage

Handrails have been installed to support safety in walking.

Ramp access has been provided at the rear of the home. The front door could not be widened easily to allow for wheel chair access. The ramp at the rear allowed us to maintain the domestic feel of the home. The front gardens are not dominated by ramps with handrails. The gradient of ramp, under Australian Standard 1428.1, is required to be not greater than 1:14. (for every 1 metre in height you need 14 metres in length).

Large bushes and shrubbery have been removed from obstructing clear views of front and rear entrances.

Pathways, stairs and ramps are level, non-slip, clearly lit, and visible both night and day. The front entry/exit to the home is sheltered. Ideally, the rear entrance should also be sheltered.

There are contrasting edges of paths, to support the independence and safety of a person with perception difficulties.

Mats have been removed at the doors (to reduce a trip hazard).

A message board on inside of rear door can support memory of appointment and provide reminders about outdoor tasks such as taking out the garbage.

Some of the ideas are simple and inexpensive, whilst others require professional installation and are more costly. For professional advise regarding your circumstances and needs, please contact the Independent Living Centre on 1300 885 886.
