Technology and you can help a person living with dementia to improve orientation, secure the home, walk safely and provide suitable access for visitors. Lights, reminder devices, locks, sensors, monitors and alarms may be useful.

Front Entrance from Driveway

At the front entrance, you will also find some stand alone assistive devices. Some will support independence and safety, and some will demonstrate ways to prevent and detect wandering.

Also note the connected technology on display at the front entrance, including:

  • electronic door strike – locking front door from remote site eg good night button
  • home automation system – good night button near bed locks doors and turns off lights
  • video intercom and bogus caller button - may provide peace of mind from unsolicited callers
  • Personal emergency response system – alarms, (falls), vital call mobile companion

Some of the ideas are simple and inexpensive, whilst others require professional installation and are more costly. For professional advise regarding your circumstances and needs, please contact the Independent Living Centre on 1300 885 886.
