Common dementia related issues in the front entrance to their home may include difficulties with mobility and using stairs, paying bills and collecting mail, disorientation, walking away from the house and becoming lost. Other important issues include access for visiting friends and carers, attending social activities and appointments, unsolicited callers and transport/ driving.

Remembering to lock doors and windows, being able to judge a dangerous situation and calling for help if needed are all important skills for maintaining both personal and home security. These skills can be compromised because of changes in memory associated with dementia. People living at home with dementia can be vulnerable to financial exploitation and risks to their well being.

Note the following Environmental features at the front entrance to the home:

  • no junk mail sticker on letter box
  • door mural
  • security screen door
  • fencing and security gate provide some protection from unwanted visitors
  • reminder signs on door to empty letterbox and garbage
  • access

The mail box has a ‘no junk mail’ sticker to reduce the amount of mail the home occupant would have to sort and handle.

The exit has been disguised by a door mural indoors. Handle covers may also be used to disguise exits.

Access is available at the front of the home. A handrail is available at the step and a balustrade has been added to the veranda for safety. Pathways, stairs and ramps are level, clearly lit, non-slip and visible both night and day. The wandering path in the front garden complies with standards for wheel chair access, the requirement for a 1:20 gradient often requires a lengthy path. The path is generally 1200mm wide, with an extension to 1500mm on the curves. A flat path to the letterbox, and removal of bushes and safe, clear pathways – can all assist safe mobility

Some of the ideas are simple and inexpensive, whilst others require professional installation and are more costly. For professional advise regarding your circumstances and needs, please contact the Independent Living Centre on 1300 885 886.
