It has simple features which make living at home more comfortable, with technology providing a sense of security and safety.
Common dementia related issues in the bedroom include difficulties with finding things, locating toilet at night, dressing, getting in and out of bed, securing the home, wandering at night, sleep disturbances and inability to control temperature and lighting.
To maintain independence and safety in the bedroom, it is important to ensure a comfortable environment, prevent falls, make it easier to find the toilet at night, enable safe wandering/ walking about at night, as well as support healthy sleep for others living in the same home.
Environmental features to note in the bedroom include:
- relaxing environment and routine
- lighting – minimise glare and reflections, sensor lights, appropriate levels
- comfortable temperature, nightwear and bedding
- contrast colour top and bottom sheets may help a person get into bed correctly
- water proof carpet and furnishings
- the wardrobe has simple ‘d’ pull handles and large drawers for easy storage.
- drawer label to reduce reliance on memory to locate items
- labelled photographs
- seasonal clothing accessible and storage of non-seasonal clothing
- enough circulation space to move about freely with a walking stick, frame or wheelchair if used
- correct bed height (for the persons needs e.g., falling out of bed)
- floor free of hazards such as rugs, bed ruffles or items that can be tripped upon or walked into
- mirrors covered if they are a disturbance
- remove electric blanket
- the curtains have been made of fire retardant fabric
- access to the main bedroom meets the accessibility standards, allowing a resident who uses a wheel chair to have access into the main bedroom. A section of the wall between the bedroom and the media room had to be moved to provide the space required
- the original air conditioning was left in place
Some of the ideas are simple and inexpensive, whilst others require professional installation and are more costly. For professional advise regarding your circumstances and needs, please contact the Independent Living Centre on 1300 885 886.
