Common dementia related issues in the rear entrance to their home may include difficulties with securing the home, mobility and using stairs and mobility aids, disorientation, walking away from the house and becoming lost, and suitable access for visitors.

Remembering to lock doors and windows, being able to judge a dangerous situation and calling for help if needed are all important skills for maintaining both personal and home security. These skills can be compromised because of changes in memory associated with dementia. People living at home with dementia can be vulnerable to financial exploitation and risks to their well being. Consider these features in a front entrance which may support independence and safety:

Remove large bushes, shrubbery from front and rear entrances
Pathways, stairs and ramps level, sheltered, clearly lit, non-slip and visible both night and day
Handrails and ramp
Security screen door
Remove mats at door (to reduce trip hazard)
Security gate, gate alarm, property exit sensor
Disguise exits with door murals, handle covers
Contrasting edges of paths
Wireless item locator (finding keys)
Orientation and reminder support - notice boards, reminders, labels and signs, clocks/calendars, ‘doorganiser’
Securing the home with emergency access - eg key safe, keyless (biometric) door lock, security door chain with a key access capacity, automatic gates
Remote locking capacity eg good night button
Reduce unsolicited callers: fencing, security screen doors, bogus caller button, video intercom system
Personal emergency response system – alarms, (falls), vital call mobile companion
Lighting - Glow in dark guidance strips / sensor light adaptor
Disorientation and wandering - infrared voice alert door entry system, infrared door beam, wander alert and monitoring systems / GPS, electronic door strike, property exit sensor, home automation system
