The Australian Government’s Dementia Initiative supports people with dementia and their carers. Funding has been committed to improve the lives of people living with dementia through a range of projects which target greater awareness, treatment and care for them, their carers and their families.

The Dementia Training Resources for People with Special Needs Project aims to increase the knowledge, understanding and expertise of carers and aged care workers in caring for people with dementia with special needs. This is one of five dementia training resources for people with special needs that has been funded by the Department of Health and Ageing under the Australian Government’s Dementia Initiative.

The other four training resources that have been developed are:

  • ‘Local Knowledge: A dementia care e-learning resource for rural and remote aged care workers’ focusing on people living in Rural and Remote Communities. This e-learning training resource improves dementia awareness and expertise of people living in rural and remote areas. This product will allow rural and remote care workers and volunteers to undertake self-paced, on demand dementia care training.
  • ‘Strangers in a Strange Land: Cultural Competence in Dementia Care’ assists training of those caring for people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds. This CD ROM resource, with interactive learning materials for people from CALD backgrounds, presents scenarios based on real stories and characters which span all environments of dementia care.
  • ‘2 Young 4 Dementia – Meeting the Needs of People with Younger Onset Dementia’ assists training of those who are caring for people with Younger Onset Dementia. This resource supports improved dementia awareness and care for younger people with dementia, their carers and their families. The training products include a DVD ROM, supporting manuals, worksheets and other guides that can be utilised in relevant work and care environments.
  • ‘Living with Dementia – A Vietnamese Family Story’ is a multi-media resource including a story of a Vietnamese family, interviews of experts and a workbook. It supports improved dementia awareness and care for people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds (CALD) and their family carers.(Orders for this resource will be taken in early 2009)
