Infrared Door Beams are small units which are placed near doorways or windows to monitor movement by projecting an invisible infrared beam across the passageway. When someone passes through the beam a built in buzzer is activated. Models vary in price and complexity. For example, the Voice Alert Door Entry System can record six separate short messages. This unit can monitor up to six zones. When someone walks through the beam the pre-recorded message is spoken. This product can be used indoors and outdoors. It uses wireless connectivity between the detectors and receiver which can be up to 300m away in open space and 100m inside. These products are available from most electronic stores.

A cheaper alternative is a croaking frog ornament that makes a noise when movement is detected nearby. These ornaments are more sensitive and will often croak at any movement nearby such as that from pets.
