Environmental Suggestions

There are a number of simple things that can be done to improve home security:

• Consider the removal of bushes or shrubbery that block the view of your home from the street. This will remove hiding places and allow neighbours a clearer view of the home;
• Secure fencing with a gate can make it much more difficult for someone to just walk in off the street;
• Security screen doors on both the front and back door allow doors to be left open for ventilation when at home, but will prevent someone from walking in on you through an open front door. Security screens for windows are also a deterrent;
• The power board can be locked with an electricity authority lock to prevent tampering. However, consider the need to access the power board for re-setting a circuit breaker or changing a fuse;
• A ‘No Junk Mail’ sign on the letter box;
• Reminders to empty the letter box and garbage;
• Maintain the garden; and
• Smoke alarms, fire extinguisher and fire blankets.
