Person Centred Response

When considering introducing new equipment, or making changes to the environment, it is important to involve the person with dementia in the decision making process wherever possible. They should be encouraged and supported in maintaining their independence and chosen lifestyle for as long as it is safe to do so.

There may be ethical and moral issues to consider if a person with dementia is no longer able to care for a pet. Some animal welfare leagues will assist in finding new homes for pets or friends and family may be able to look after the animal whilst still allowing some interaction between the person with dementia and their pet.
