Environmental Suggestions

Windows – sheer net curtains allow light in but reduce daytime glare and night-time reflections, which can be distressing for the person with dementia. Reflections in the glass can be misinterpreted as a stranger in the home, or the person is in a strange environment. The heavier style drapes will block out night time light or noise and can assist with keeping the house cool during the summer months. Both drapes and nylon curtains can be made from fire retardant material.

Mirrors - if seeing their own or others reflections in mirrors is distressing or confusing to the person with dementia remove or cover up all mirrors.

TV or Computer - images or glare from windows and lights that are reflected onto television or computer screens can reduce the visibility of the display significantly. This makes it impossible for the person with dementia to view programs and text comfortably. Consider the layout of the room where they watch TV or use the computer. Moving a lamp, or closing the blinds, can reduce the amount of glare reflected onto a screen. Another alternative may be to move the TV away from the source of the light or reflection if the person with dementia is agreeable to this.
