Advanced Technology Suggestions
Chair Occupancy Sensors - the sensor pad is placed under the lounge chair cushion and monitors the movement of the person seated. If the person leaves the chair the sensor picks up the change in weight and communicates using a buzzer to alert the carer. Chair occupancy sensors also work as part of a Telecare package and can be programmed to alert a call centre about the movements of the person with dementia via the telephone.
Personal Emergency Response Alarms (PERS) - a personal emergency response alarm can be worn as a pendant around the neck, or similar to a wrist watch on the wrist. If the person falls and needs assistance, they press a button on their pendant which activates a speaker unit to dial a 24 hour support call centre. Many PERS alarms are waterproof and designed to be worn in the shower and to bed. This system is useful for the early stages of dementia, where the wearer is able to recognise their need for help and activate the system.
Automated / Smart Home Technology uses sensor technology to turn lights on and off and adjust the level of lighting. Sensors are placed in rooms throughout the home to measure changes in light levels and adjust these levels as required to a pre-programmed level that has been set by the home owner. This system can be programmed to turn off lights and appliances at night when you go to bed.
